Become an Effective Listener with No Agenda

A team member or doctor who is an effective listener is highly valued. Most of us think we are good listeners. A good way to test yourself for your listening skills is in a conversation, if you are always thinking of how to respond without absorbing what is being said, you are not a good listener.

Do you want to improve your listening skills? Why? What is your motivation? Could it improve your relationships? Could it increase your sales?

A good listener would:
• Begin with no agenda in mind. This includes how you would solve their dental problems.
• Know who is the important person in this conversation
• Never even think of interrupting
• Listen with eyes, ears and body
• Answer with another question
• Knows that listening is more than hearing
• Focuses on the speaker and really concentrate
• Speak 20% of the time with the speaker talking 80 percent of the time
• Not think of an answer as the other person talks
• Reflect back, summarize with them
• Indicate they are listening with eyes, expressions, agreements

Just think how your sales would increase if you really practiced good effective listening skills. How do you practice listening? Pair up with a team member and have a conversation of really listening to each other.
