Make the Right Choices with Dental Consultancy

Dental Consultancy

by Dr. Bill Blatchford Dental Consultancy

Dentistry can be rewarding emotionally and financially, if done correctly. Certain practices are very successful. They know themselves very well. They have standards and are able to communicate those values with passion and energy. One thing is very clear, even with dentists—that behavior with its impending results is a choice.

We have choices every minute of the day. What we choose to do with the paths presented to us is a choice. In dentistry, putting up with unskilled average staff is a choice. Not being accountable for your own actions is a choice. Having an overhead of 83% is a choice. Selecting a poor quality laboratory is a choice. Avoiding, “Expensive” continuing education courses is a choice. Being frustrated in dentistry is a choice. Trying to copy others instead of discovering yourself is a choice and that’s where Dental Consultancy comes in.

The good news is you can change your behavior. You can change your choice.

We have all made a choice to be in dentistry. For many of us, the fulfillment of our days is in the intricacies of developing the perfect treatment plan, the challenge of creating a dazzling smile, the reward of the radiant result. The business of dentistry provides many unparalleled qualities of independence, entrepreneurial leadership, teamsmanship, total control and so many choices.

Putting words into action is a choice. Walking your talk is a choice. Our behavior and results are a choice. Turning goals and lofty dreams into reality is a choice, a choice every minute of our day. How you plan your dental practice is also a choice.

Many dentists are slow to embrace the importance of planning, something that we try and teach people with our Dental Consultancy courses. The public recognizes dentistry is a choice and not a needed service. Since dentistry is a choice, develop a niche and be the leader. Create a long-range plan, based on your personal vision and values and seek expert advice to position yourself as the expert in your area.

Lead the marketplace, for if you wait for every answer, it is too late. You do not have the final answer if your overhead is 75% or higher. High overhead is a choice. The bigger, busier model of trying to be “everything to everyone” results in a higher overhead. It takes more staff for smaller procedures on many patients. Change the mix of treatment you offer to more optional services. Offer choices, not just the “patch-type” dentistry. Resign from the Crown of Year Club where the staff percentage is near 30 percent and the lab is under 10 percent. A lower overhead percentage means acquiring new skills and attitude. Think of the passion in serving patients with beautiful smiles.

Revisit your reasons for entering dentistry. Is there satisfaction in keeping things the same or is there a real possibility for you to take some risk, learn new skills, and rekindle the excitement you first felt in being a dentist? The skills, knowledge, and coaching are available to you. Take a chance. Give it your best. Make the right choices.
