Help for the Cheerleader with a Dental Practice Consultant

Dental Practice Consultant

by Dr. Bill Blatchford Dental Practice Consultant

As a I Dental Practice Consultant, I enjoy the challenge of working with dentists who feel frustrated, unfulfilled, overworked and underpaid. Some worry about business decisions and are running their practices out of control.

Being successful in dentistry is not a secret. The challenge is being the practice owner, leader a mechanical operator and the only licensed diagnostician. The owner also wears a team hat and letterman’s jacket. The owner is also the head cheerleader. The dentist wears every hat and must know every position played on the team. As a dental practice consultant I know how easy it can be to get lost in the crowd unable to see the scoreboard.

Being a dental dental practice consultant it is my job to help dentists find themselves, define their standards and values and help them discover their dreams. As a dental practice consultant I try to help dentists define and create a plan to help them get there. Using basic business principles of vision, goal setting, leadership, budgeting, communication, sales, and marketing, I coach them to achieve their dream.

As a practicing dentist for twenty years, I understand and appreciate the science and technology. I understand the debt burden of a young dentist, the business choices in partnerships and associateships. I also know the real love many dentists feel for the actual practicing along with the extraordinary generational relationships that make a practice.

Then there is the distinct dental opportunity to continue to practice as long as you are able and have desire. There is no other profession like it. In looking back, I was always drawn to organization and efficiency. Time management skills have been important all along. I negotiated to have my college summer job be based on a salary when all the tasks were complete, rather than hourly and trying to, “Stretch,” the job. In dental school, I worked several jobs and was aware of time efficiency and value/result.

Many dentists mistakenly believe if they open their office five or six days a week, this will make them more profitable. In my 18 years of dental practice consultant coaching, I see the opposite. Profitability actually increases by decreasing the hours in the office.

With many young dentists, I see difficult situations after the fact. Currently, a popular method is for a doctor to have a younger partner buy in for 49%, the selling doctor retains 51% control. Buyers beware: just because someone has been in practice for twenty years does not mean there is money to split in half. The assumption is 1 + 1 = 3. That means you purchased a minority share but still have to build your practice and find new patients. In some instances, the new doctor does not see any hygiene patients for treatment. By the selling doctor retaining 51%, he is still the leader in the eyes of the staff and the 49% doctor is the, “Interloper.” This is a challenging situation as one doctor always ends up unhappy.

There is joy however, in Mudville when a doctor regains his enthusiasm about dentistry and does not want to quit. When we are able to help create a “Retire as You Go” scenario with team and patients with our dental practice consultant firm while the doctor continues for as long as he is able or desires, this is very rewarding.
