Ask Your Dental Coach Does It Add Meaning to Your Life?

Dental Coach

Dr. Christina Blatchford Dental Coach

My dad, Dr. Bill Blatchford, also a dental coach, has long admonished our clients to rid themselves of things that are not safe for people who depend on their eyes and hands for their livelihood. The mantra is “no ladders, no chain saws, no skill saws.”  The caveat is, “Unless it adds meaning to your life.”

Let’s discuss what would add meaning to your life.  We lost a good friend, a conscientious rider, who found meaning in riding motorcycles. He and another dental friend were riding in Florida one sunny day, stopped at a red light, which I understand now, is a vulnerable position. A texting driver did not see them and our friend died, while the other rider barely survived. Accidents do happen and you have to decide how much meaning this adds to your life.

My dad was a pilot for 40 years, flying single engine, as well as pressurized twins. His last plane was an amphibious floatplane. It could land on water or a runway. He loved it, flying over 5,000 hours. It added meaning to his life. When he recognized he would actually avoid landing on the water because of the potential hazards, he chose to sell his airplane and end his flying career on a high note.

We have had several dentists who were cleaning gutters or putting up Christmas lights and found ladders are not their friends.  When you are netting $50K a month and a broken arm takes you out for several months with pins and surgeries, how much meaning is there for you to take on jobs that someone else can do? If you miss two months work, what is the cost?

A very sad incident recently happened to a college friend, an orthodontist. He hired an expert to re-roof his home. Still, he felt the need to show the expert what made his roof unique. In doing so, our dental friend fell, broke four ribs, his scapula and his clavicle. Even worse, he crushed his T5, T6, T7, and damaged his spinal cord. He will never walk again.

Think before you turn to your saw, your ladder, or another adventure. Consider, is there someone else I could hire to do this? Does this really add to my life so much, I will proceed? Is there a better way to accomplish this? Am I relying on my belief that I can do this; that I don’t need to pay someone else to do work that I have done before?

Your hands, your brains, and your eyes are the pathway to profitability. You have it made.  Don’t blow it with just a second or two on a ladder.
